Death of Eight Belles Turns Spotlight on Racehorse Health and Safety

    The catastrophic injuries sustained by Eight Belles following her second-place finish in the May 3 Kentucky Derby has the racing industry, veterinarians, animal rights groups, and the general public debating how to make horseracing safer for its equine athletes.

    The AAEP has talked with and offered assistance to industry leaders and, through the expertise of its individual members and its collective resources as an association, stands ready to help as the industry launches its examination of racehorse safety following the death of Eight Belles.While the discussion of injuries is multifaceted, injury rates, the training and racing of 2-year-olds, and the industry's next steps need to be studied and addressed.
