Injection-Port Caps
The caps of certain safety syringes fit perfectly over most IV extension-set injection ports. Just remove the cap when giving an injection, and replace it when you are done. This keeps the ports clean and dry, especially when a patient is vomiting and/or has diarrhea.

Syringe Caps to Go
We use the caps of certain safety syringes to cap oral medications that are sent home in syringes. The caps must be cut to a little shorter than half to make them fit.

Mixing Medications
To help mix medications, we taped a syringe case that holds a 12-cc syringe next to the sink. We use the syringe repeatedly for adding milliliters of water to medications that require it. I poked a small hole in the bottom of the case to allow it to drain.

Drug Logs
Our drug logs are kept in an Excel spreadsheet on a computer in our treatment area. The spreadsheet tabulates information for each controlled drug in our hospital, including pills, injectables, and patches. After each drug container is empty, we print a hard copy to keep in our log binder.
