Letters — Puppy and Kitten Socialization

by Sharon L. Crowell-Davis, DVM, PhD, DACVB, Walter Legg, DVM, David Stansfield, BVSc, MRCVS

I really enjoyed the Understanding Behavior article "Socialization Classes for Puppies and Kittens" (November 2007), written by Dr. Crowell-Davis. I would like to start these classes at our hospital. Do you have any suggestions on where to get more information on these classes? I'd like to know if there are any other articles or books on the subject or someone I can speak to about starting from scratch.

    John Boley, DVM
    Animal Hospital of Colorado Springs

For information on kitten socialization, I recommend Dr. Kersti Seksel's Training Your Cat. It's available through Hyland House (www.australianbookgroup.com.au) and Dr. Seksel's Web site (www.sabs.com.au). Watch for an upcoming Understanding Behavior that will review books on puppy socialization.
