Have you noticed that, when performing culture and sensitivity testing on pyoderma cases, we have more and more results of methicillin resistance and multi drug resistance? We used to believe that only animals exposed to many antibiotic or belonging to veterinarians or other medical personnel would have this problem. Do you now see it also in other situations (e.g., first time pyoderma)?

Veterinarians have been lucky for many years and have been able to successfully use the same antibiotics to treat pyoderma, but it now looks like we have to be much more careful about using systemic antibiotics to treat pyoderma. Perhaps we should save systemic antibiotics for severe cases and treat the milder cases just with topical therapy? Will it be a matter of time before that therapeutic approach also contributes to resistance? We know that the way to detect resistance is through culture and sensitivity testing, but instead of limiting this to severe cases maybe we should be culturing mild and recurrent cases as well. Should we recommend to limit exposure to other pets and people when we have extremely resistant cases?
